Why?
I’m the sort of person who doesn’t buy a purse unless it’s big enough to hold a decent-sized book. I have an irrational fear of being stuck somewhere boring without anything to read. I read shampoo bottles, cereal boxes, the cover of soap opera digest if that’s all that’s available.
Being a compulsive reader, in my experience, naturally leads to becoming a casual writer. A book ends before you’re ready to leave that world, and so you stay for a little while in your imagination. Eventually, if you get enough books in there, they start to combine and create something new and suddenly you have an idea for a book you’d really love to read, if only someone would write it. Then you decide to write it yourself.
That’s how I got started, and it means I wear my influences pretty blatantly on my sleeve. It also means that I don’t really write for anyone but myself, and maybe a couple of friends who’re kind enough to express approval of the odd little things I’ve sent their way.
So, why put them on internet? Good question. On one hand, now that I make my living as an out-of-work actor, I’ve got a lot of time. Time to make websites, and also time to look at what other people have made and notice enough like-minded weirdoes to think that there might be an audience for this sort of electronic scribbling. On the other, I’ve been working on a project that’s a bit more serious and a bit more ambitious, which I hope to some day send out into the world to make its way in earnest. So I’m making a little space for it to live.
“Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.” -Robert Heinlein
